I’m a Material Girl but Indifference is the Product of Social Excess features different assortments of vintage and found items from an imagined vanity. Each arrangement of contemporary objects reference items found within the Art Gallery of Ontario Thomson Collection’s display of miniature objects and curiosities. These objects are vessels, mirrors and emblems of ornament and excess. Necklace busts mirror stoic ivory busts; perfume bottles allude to snuff bottles; and compact mirrors symbolize pride, narcissism and the lavish wealth of past eras. By pairing rare collectable items with thrift store goods, the series exemplifies the brevity of worldly pleasures in a late-stage consumer world, and the futility of symbols of femininity, decadence and luxury.
This project was made possible with the support of the Art Gallery of Ontario.
